In February 2024, Erika—Matías Perlata Proske's mother—contacted us to ask Matías to write his story. He told it over and over again and felt the need to put it down in writing. Initially, the idea was to make three copies: one for him, one for Erika, and one "for the day Matías has children." We began working in June 2024 and soon realized that his story could help many children and families going through adoption. The first edition was published in September 2024; today we are on the sixth, with almost 2,000 books in the hands of readers. The profits from the sale of the books go to foster homes.

Excerpt from the book

Matías recounts his childhood in Santa Fe, the years of violence in his home, his arrival at Casa Cuna, and his life there; he talks about friendships, fears, survival strategies, and the persistent desire to "be with a family."

He explains why she writes: he wants to help other young adoptees, expose the harshness of the system, and break down prejudices surrounding adoption. "This is the book I wish I had read," he says.

This book also features the voice of Erika, his mother. She recounts her time meeting her son, his adoption, and the emotional connection that changed both of their lives.

The title, I Am Matías - Neither Victim Nor Consolation Prize, sums up exactly how he feels: he is neither a victim nor his mother's consolation prize.

From an intimate idea to an impactful edition

From day one, we helped Matías find his voice as a writer : we worked on the first-person tone, the chapter structure, the titles, and the clarity of each message so that his story would reach as many people as possible. In parallel, we handled the entire editorial and technical process: curating the material, structuring the narrative, searching for photos to capture the texts to represent the stories. We proofread, corrected, and in prepress, we prepared for the final book (bleeds, color profiles, and exports).

Our way of working is to be close and available at every opportunity, so that the story reaches those who need it with clarity and beauty.

What this book left us

This book taught us a great deal and exposed us to unknown realities. We were moved to hear the story firsthand, to follow his transformation, and to witness Matías's growth as an author and social actor.

  • We learned about the adoption system and life in foster homes from the voices of those who lived it.

  • We confirm the value of close support for a biography to find its form.

  • We saw how a book can spark conversations and generate support networks.

Matías and a closing that moved us

Along with his mother, Erika, Matías appeared on television, radio, and gave countless book presentations in various provinces and towns; he even presented it in Spain. The book was declared of national interest by the Senate of Argentina.

And Matías took an even bigger step: today he's studying for a degree in Childhood, Adolescence, and Family and works in homes to support children who, like him, are waiting for a family.
